Sandra Mutukwa
Sandra Mutukwa (b. 2003, Poland) migrated from Wrocław to Liverpool at 5 years old. Her practice spans physical and digital mediums – from oil paintings and risograph prints based on new and archival photography to makeshift animation, poetry and textile works. Through this multidisciplinary approach, her exploration of childhood memories (leaving Poland seeking diversity in the UK) is translated into sentimental imagery. Her investigation into the concept of belonging when migrating involuntarily aligns with the broader discourse surrounding the politics of immigration. Amidst the recent rise of the far-right, Mutukwa is continuously motivated by the current political climate to create work which combats the anti-immigration riots and negative stereotypes of migrants amplified by the media. Attempting to link physical displacement to her internal conflict surrounding cultural integration, her work aims to contribute to the activism against xenophobia in Britain.
Project: Od Przedszkola To Reception
Influenced by Carrie Mae Weems’ practice of restaging, Mutukwa’s most recent project, Od Przedszkola To Reception (2026), reimagines significant school incidents she remembers from the years immediately before, during, and right after her migration. As part of the underrepresented subgroup of mixed-race Polish immigrants, she represents herself not only in her self-portraits but also through the portrayal of her experiences, which defy the stereotypes of an immigrant from Poland.
