Routes of Knowledge is a community library project located in San Giovanni a Teduccio, Naples, developed as part of a wider urban design proposal centred on slow living. The project responds to the fast pace of contemporary urban and digital life by creating an environment that encourages slower, more reflective forms of learning through movement, atmosphere, and social interaction. Positioned between the density of the city and the openness of the coastline, the library acts as a transition between loud and quiet, collective and individual, active and contemplative spaces.

The concept of the project is rooted in the idea of journey and choice. A network of ground-level and elevated walkways creates multiple routes through the building, allowing visitors to choose their own path and pace through the various programmes. This flexible circulation strategy reinforces the project’s aim of promoting exploration and slower engagement with space.
The library combines spaces for reading, making, discussion, and exchange. Quiet reading rooms and the book tower provide areas for retreat and concentration, while paper-making workshops, art studios, the children’s library, and book swap spaces encourage creativity and interaction through analogue forms of learning. A café with coffee roasting facilities and a communal “living room” with stepped seating towards the coast create informal social spaces for gathering and discussion.

The building is wrapped in a perforated façade with a gradient pattern inspired by sound waves, expressing the project’s exploration of noise, silence, and transition. Through these spatial and material strategies, Routes of Knowledge proposes a slower and more community-focused approach to civic architecture and learning.
