In San Giovanni a Teduccio, within the wider context of Campania, architecture must respond to a quiet but persistent form of exclusion, spaces that fail to recognise the diversity of those who use them. Demographic data shows a high proportion of 18–24-year-olds particularly men leave education early, contributing to high levels of unemployment and long-term instability. A lack of accessible recreational and community spaces has also limited opportunities for social interaction and collective identity due to a wider condition of marginalisation, where individuals feel disconnected from each other.
This proposal reimagines education as a lifelong, community-based process rather than a fixed institutional phase within an existing context. It offers a hybrid building that merges learning, culture, and civic life, welcoming those who wish to return to education, as well as those seeking support, or simply a place to belong. In an area where community infrastructure is limited and collective identity has weakened, the building acts as a social anchor to this new masterplan. In response to legal requirements concerning the protection of the site’s historical and architectural heritage, the Thesis project adopts an existing building as the basis for intervention as a choice for adaptive re-use to celebrate the sites heritage and identity, whilst creating something new for the surrounding community.
The architecture is shaped by real lives. It integrates childcare to enable higher participation, quiet and reflective spaces for wellbeing, multi-faith provision to support spiritual diversity, and inclusive facilities that remove social and physical barriers.
Ultimately, this is not just a building, but a framework for re-engagement and belonging. It challenges the idea that education is exclusive and instead positions it as open to anyone who needs it. Through this, the building becomes a tool for equity, creating a space that does not ask who you are before welcoming you, but simply makes room for everyone, regardless of age, gender, faith, disability.
