MA Fine Art
Kirsty Madden
I am a multimedia artist from Kilrea Co Derry, I graduated from LJMU in 2022 with a bachelor's in Fine Art. My practice plays with the idea of space and its constraints using a scale of miniaturised rooms. I explore the ideals of the ‘domestic’ that has been placed onto me and how traditional gender roles and the stereotyping of societal norms have affected my viewpoint of these spaces, such as the kitchen. I also incorporate visual identifiers of my Irish catholic upbringing as nods to my own childhood and memories of these objects in my own domestic spaces. As well as creating sculptures and statues that play with the themes of femininity, the peculiar and womanhood, using my own lived experience as a basis.
Project: Doll House
This is the finished piece from my Masters degree show, the work depicts a fully furnished doll's house sat on a table in an empty room. I intentionally used the making process as a further extension behind the meaning of the work using techniques traditionally taught to children in their early years, such as papier mache. The work appears to be just finished with the tools and materials used just off to the side on a separate side table.
The piece explores my ideas of the domestic in the home and the reality of my probably never being able to own my own space but still having the need to decorate a lived space.
