BA (Hons) Graphic Design & Illustration

Bethany Doran

As an illustrator I create hand-drawn sketches featuring intense contrast, ethereal textures and intricate details for figure drawing and character design. I am inspired by literature, Romantic art and facets of Surrealism: my style combining anatomical realism with fantasy, Gothic horror and abstract concepts. My work is often intended to contain a highly emotional, dreamlike atmospheres and tragic characters alongside technical accuracy. While I am constantly aiming to objectively improve my drawing skills, I also find value in using art as an emotional outlet, expressing intense moods and spiritual themes - combining realistic figures with absurd, supernatural Surrealism is also a lot more fun than sketching a boring image of a regular person. No disrespect to any Realistists, but why would you draw people when you can draw fairies? My style is intended to be emotive and mesmerising, with bold light and shadow to create a sense of volume and drama. As an avid reader many of my illustrations are inspired by literature, which is why I like to imagine working in a field that would let me combine both passions, such as book design.
